Plug-in
Also called: digital additions to a computer program or system
A plug-in is a piece of software that you can use to supplement or extend a digital system or computer program. This piece of software contains additional functionality. For example, by using plug-ins, you add loose code elements to a Web site. Not every plug-in can run on its own. There are plug-ins where you need a host application to use the software addition. The literal translation of plug-ins (that you can plug something into something) does not always hold true.
Examples of well-known plug-ins
There are several examples of well-known and widely used plug-ins. The best-known example is the Yoast SEO plugin. This is the world's most widely used search engine optimization (SEO) plugin. In addition, the Google Analytics by Yoast is widely used to access web analytics data. Other well-known (WordPress) plug-ins are WP rocket to increase website speed and the Broken Link Checker to easily check the website for broken links.
Be careful when using digital add-ins to a computer program or system. If you add too many plug-ins to a Web site, it can clutter up the basic code of the Web site, which can lower your SEO value or slow down your page speed, for example. Also, it's good to realize that plug-ins can interfere with each other with respect to functionality.
