Country extension
A country extension is a term for is the addition after a domain name that relates to the nationality targeted by the website in question. For example, the ".nl" extension is used for website targeting the Dutch market and a ".de" extension is used for website targeting the German market.
Thus, the use of a country extension is of great value for websites that target nationwide. Country extensions consist of two letters that are almost always established based on the ISO 3166-1 standard. This assumes the national spelling of the country in question. Thus, the ".de" extension refers to Deutschland.
The ".com" extension is often used for an English language website but is also widely used for internationally operating companies. Therefore, this extension is a generic extension and not a country extension because there is no specific country or territory as with a ".eu" extension (referring to Europe).
For an English-language website that specifically targets the United Kingdom, it is better to use a "co.uk" extension.
