Extranet
Also called: dealer environment
An extranet is a variant of an intranet, an internal computer network, where this network is also opened up to third parties from outside the organization.
Extranet can also refer to a dedicated corporate Web site that can be accessed by employees, customers and suppliers alike. Such an extranet can be accessed from anywhere in the world using a Web browser, provided the user has the appropriate user credentials (usually a username and password). Often these types of environments have the interactive nature of a Web application and are focused on the exchange of information.
Consider sharing news and information specifically for customers and suppliers or a wholesaler using an extranet to allow dealers to access the product catalog and place orders.
