Mobilegeddon
Also known as: Google Mobile Friendly Update
Mobilegeddon is a nickname for a Google update that was implemented with the goal of making mobile-friendly Web pages appear higher in the search engine's search results when searched with a mobile device. This update was introduced (on April 21, 2015) to better serve the increasing use of the search engine with mobile devices. This is why this update was officially named the "Google Mobile Friendly Update."
The term "Mobilegeddon" was used by many webmasters because the Google Mobile Friendly Update would result in mobile-unfriendly pages dropping in rankings. Mobilegeddon turned out to be justified. Those websites that do not automatically scale to a screen (i.e., those that are not mobile responsive or those that do not have a mobile version are shown less on smartphones.
This included the change that Google also indexes apps with this Google Mobile Friendly Update. One notable Mobilegeddon fun fact is that the Google Mobile Friendly Update was announced in advance. In this case, it was the first time an update was announced and webmasters were enabled to take precautions.
