Web server
Also called: HTTP server
A Web server is a computer system that is continuously connected to a network and allows users of that network to retrieve data. Web servers play a central role on the Internet. In web hosting, a Web site's files are stored on a Web server so that the Web site can be accessed 24 hours a day over the worldwide Web using the HTTP protocol.
Strictly speaking, the Web server is an application that handles HTTP traffic. In practice, the entire hardware of a server is considered the Web server. Web servers are housed by hosting providers in data centers, which are equipped with high-speed network connections, reliable power supply and air conditioning.
A collection of Web servers set up specifically to download static files as quickly as possible is called a content delivery network(cdn).
