HTTP
Also known as: HyperText Transfer Protocol
The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an Internet protocol used when visiting Web sites. This protocol determines how visitors(browsers) and Web servers communicate with each other on the World Wide Web.
Within the protocol, a visitor sends a request (request) to a Web server. The request is sent via the server's IP address. Thanks to the DNS system, this address does not need to be known to the user and Web sites can be identified by domain names. The request includes the address that the visitor wants to request. Technical information about the user is also sent along with any cookies. The server then sends a response to the user's browser consisting of the desired page or file.
When the communication between web server and web browser is secured using SSL, it is also called https.
