Rich text
Also called: rich text or rich text format(RTF)
Rich text or "rich text" is text that has formatting and other non-text properties. This is in contrast to plain text. To the file in which the text is stored, these granted formatting properties are stored through additional source codes, which are not literally visible to the reader when viewing, editing and printing the document.
Examples of properties and other nontext content that can be added to rich text are fonts, font size, font styles (such as italics and bold), images and hyperlinks. An example of a rich text document is a Web page formatted in HTML and CSS.
Formatted texts are generally edited in software in which the formatting can be viewed and changed simultaneously. Programs in which you see the end result as you edit ("what you see is what you get") are also called rich text editors.
Rich Text Format
A file format derived from rich text is the Rich Text Format (abbreviated RTF). This file type was developed by Microsoft. The .rtf format was used in word processor WordPad. RTF also formed the basis for the proprietary file formats of programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook until 2008. New versions of these programs and files are based on XML.
