Resolution
Resolution is the size of a digital image, expressed in pixels (picture points). This can be the size of a digital photograph, image or video, or the size of a monitor screen. The higher the resolution, the more information the image can contain. This translates into sharper photos and videos on which more details are visible.
The term resolution is also used to indicate how accurately printers and scanners work. Then it is often expressed in DPI(dots per inch), the maximum number of dots per inch a device can print or perceive.
Resolutions are generally noted by giving the width and height in pixels, separated by a × sign. Resolution does not automatically say anything about the physical size of the image. This also depends on pixel density, or the number of pixels per inch or per centimeter.
Resolutions higher and higher
In both computer screens and televisions, resolutions have been increasing for decades. The same trend is occurring with digital cameras, smartphones and tablets. Because of the size diversity in devices and screen sizes, there is also a variety of resolutions and aspect ratios in circulation.
Popular resolutions for computer screens and laptops are 1366×768 and 1920×1080. The latter is also called HD and is also the standard for high-definition television (HDTV). Its successor, UHDTV, includes the resolutions 3840×2160 (aka 4K) and 7680×4320 pixels (8K). Smartphones and tablets are also now being provided with HD resolutions.
