Accessibility
Also called: accessibility or web accessibility
Web accessibility is the principle of making Web sites accessible to all visitors, including people with disabilities. A good Web site not only looks sleek to the average visitor, but is also designed to be usable by visitors with disabilities, such as visual, motor and cognitive impairments.
This includes ensuring that the html code of pages adds structure and meaning to texts, that alternative text versions of images and video are available, that texts are written and formatted so that they are easy to read, and that the site is built so that it can be used easily with and without a mouse. These are just a few general examples.
By paying sufficient attention to accessibility, a Web site will work well on any device with any type of Web browser. Also, an accessibility-built website will more easily rank well in search engines as well.
Several international and national guidelines exist around website accessibility, such as the W3C 's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the Dutch government's Web Guidelines.
