HTML
Also called: HyperText Markup Language or Extensible HyperText Markup Language(XHTML)
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the language in which the content of Web pages is structured. HTML also forms the basis for the graphic layout of Internet sites. The html tags divide a Web page into meaningful chunks, such as headings, paragraphs, lists and tables, and provide functionalities such as hyperlinks. The design of the page is then determined with the help of CSS stylesheets and graphics.
Within HTML itself, there are also options for defining design (such as colors and fonts), that is, without a style sheet. However, their use is not recommended. HTML should be limited to describing the structure of a Web page and the structure and meaning of parts of the information. This makes the Web document more readable for search engines and also makes it easier to modify the layout of a Web site later.
When developing websites, knowledge of HTML is definitely a plus. When maintaining websites using a content management system, this knowledge is often not necessarily required.
XHTML is a variant that combines the W3C standards HTML and XML.
