JPEG
Also known as: Joint Photographic Experts Group or JPG
Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) is a file format for storing images. Files in this format have the extension .jpg or .jpeg.
In the JPG format, the color values of the various pixels in a photograph or other image are converted to bytes and bits. Various compression techniques can be used in this process, which allow detailed images to be converted to relatively small files.
Depending on the degree of compression, some loss of quality occurs. This is especially visible in graphic images consisting of large color areas, letters and clean lines, for which the GIF format is more suitable. With photos, this is less visible and files are still manageable at low compression. Because of this, JPEG is also widely used within websites.
Because the color palette is limited to 8 bits per color, 16 million different colors can be used in a JPG image. This is more than enough in most cases, although today there are cameras that can detect even more colors.
