MySQL
MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS) and query language based on SQL (Structured Query Language). MySQL's popularity is due in part to the fact that the underlying software is open source and that the database system is relatively easy to combine with the popular server-side scripting language PHP.
MySQL or derivative database systems have been offered by most hosting providers for decades. Many well-known Web sites, Web applications and content management systems use MySQL for data storage.
In practice, many providers today work with MariaDB. This is a derivative of MySQL with virtually the same functionality. This "fork" was created after MySQL fell into the hands of Oracle. The names MySQL and MariaDB are based on the names of founder Monty Widenius' daughters, My and Maria.
