Metatag
Also called: meta-description or meta-keywords
A meta tag is a line of html code that can be used to add additional descriptive information to a Web page that is not visible to the visitor. Meta tags are best known for their use by search engines. The best-known meta tags are those for adding keywords and a description to the page.
The specified keywords were used by search engines in the past when compiling search results, but they have fallen into disuse. Adding meta-keywords to the website is no longer necessary; search engines extract them themselves from the website's content.
The meta-description is still relevant to search engines like Google, though. In many cases, this text is displayed as a short description of the page with the search result. A catchy meta-description of no more than 155 characters and provided with a few keywords can make a website stand out more among the other search results.
Another relevant metatag is a tag to influence the indexing behavior of search engine crawlers, part of the robots exclusion standard. Adding a meta tag called viewport sets the size at which the page opens and the extent to which visitors are allowed to zoom in and out.
