SSL
Also called: Secure Sockets Layer, Transport Layer Security(TLS) or HTTP Secure(HTTPS)
SSL is a technique for securing traffic between a Web server and a visitor. With SSL, data exchanged over the http protocol is sent encrypted. As a result, in the event traffic is intercepted or eavesdropped, the data in the requests and responses is not readable to third parties and cannot be manipulated along the way. SSL is used, among other things, for user privacy and to secure information systems.
HTTPS and lock in the address bar
Addresses loaded using SSL have the prefix https instead of http. A website visited using SSL can be identified by a green lock in the address bar.
The use of https is now the defacto standard for all websites. In addition to protecting visitors' privacy, the use of SSL is also a factor for findability in Google.
SSL certificates
The encryption of https traffic uses certificates. In addition to encryption, these SSL certificates are also used to verify the identity of the server.
With extended validation (EV) certificates, an SSL certificate can also be linked to an organization's identity. EV validation is primarily used by organizations that work with the most sensitive information, including products and data around finance (e.g., online banking), healthcare and health, and DigiD.
