Coverage errors
When optimizing the SEO on your website, it is important to avoid coverage errors. When your website is indexed by search engines, these types of errors are going to cause lower rankings on Google. Some examples of coverage errors are server errors and 404 pages:
- A server error means that a script generates error on the web page. It means there is an error in the HTML of a page. Here you can think of a typo, missing core file in the CMS or there update/plugin/theme error of the CMS.
- A 404 page is displayed when you go to a link that no longer exists. This link has been moved, deleted or never existed. A user may encounter a 404 page due to a typo in the URL, error in copying and pasting, clicking on a broken or shortened link and the relocation or deletion of content.
There are several SEO tools you can use to prevent coverage errors. One of the most well-known tools for this is the Google Search Console.
Google Search Console
The Google Search Console allows you to create tools and reports of search traffic. In addition, you can measure website performance and troubleshoot problems so that your website works optimally. Any tools offered by the Google search Console are:
- Search analytics: To find out how users end up on your website. Analyze your site's clicks, position and impressions on Google Search to optimize your content
- Content display: By sending individual URLs and sitemaps for crawlers, you ensure that Google is using the most recent version of your site
- Problem notifications: The Search Console sends emails when Google sees a problem on your site
- Google insight: Use the URL inspection tool to read detailed display, crawler and indexing data from the Google index about your pages.
In addition to Google Search Console, you can use other tools to detect coverage errors. These are tools such as Ahrefs and Screaming Frog. Even though server errors or 404 pages may not seem like the end of the world, they do make a big difference in your Google score. So try to pay close attention to coverage errors on your website.
