Vertical search engine
Also called: vertical or vertical search engine
A vertical search engine is a Web site that, unlike regular search engines, specializes in a particular topic. Examples of categories or niches include health insurance, airline tickets, homes and cars. Vertical search engines distinguish themselves with in-depth knowledge of their industry and practical search capabilities to filter and compare results.
The search results of most vertical search engines come from the Internet (thanks to a crawler) and from partners with whom they collaborate. In many cases, the available information is supplemented and enriched by an editorial team. A vertical search engine is also called a vertical.
In almost all verticals, the revenue model is based on advertisers. These ads may include conventional banners and text links, advertorials, an expanded listing or a higher position in search results. With some specialty search engines and comparators, companies pay for each click-through or per sale or lead generated.
Funda, Vliegtickets.nl, Kieskeurig, Independer and Hapsalons.nl are some examples of vertical search engines.
