Purple pants
Purple pants is a joking term for someone working in the marketing world. The term was introduced in 2006 by weblog GeenStijl, which regularly dismisses marketers as talking heads. Since its introduction, the term has taken on a life of its own. Although the epithet "purple pants" certainly cannot be considered a compliment, many marketers wear the term as a joke.
Most purple pants engage in some form of online marketing. They prefer to have at least two different positions on their business cards, usually because they are not sufficiently qualified to excel in any of them. The purple pants sprinkle phrases that are laced with jargon but really have no substance.
The purple pants closely follow the latest developments in their field and excel at mispredicting new trends. In order to showcase their knowledge and build authority, purple pants create their own platforms, for example, in the form of weblogs and trade magazines. Many earn more from their appearances as speakers or authors than from actually practicing their craft.
Whether marketers actually wear purple pants above average has not been shown.
