Instand messaging (IM) is a form of direct communication over the World Wide Web. Messages are not publicly readable, but are delivered directly to the recipient. Instant messages can be exchanged through a Web site or a special program. It can take the form of a chat conversation or be similar to sending and receiving e-mail.
Examples of instant messaging platforms include WhatsApp, Ping, Skype and Google Talk. Various Internet forums and social networking sites, including Twitter and Facebook, also offer the ability to exchange direct messages. Instant messaging is also used to provide personalized customer service, including through the use of chatbots.
