Data loss prevention
Also called: data leak prevention
Data loss prevention (DLP) is a tool that ensures that an organization's sensitive data is not lost, misused or gets to unauthorized parties. Organizations use DLP to protect and secure their data from data loss and data breaches. DLP software protects data in three different places: when used by authorized personnel, during transfer over the intranet, and in the database. Data Loss Prevention blocks unauthorized distribution of sensitive data inside and outside an organization's networks.
Data Loss Prevention software is able to determine which files contain sensitive information. If the software identifies sensitive data, it provides protective measures such as encryption and alerts. This prevents accidental or deliberately shared data from putting the organization at risk. Examples of sensitive data include personally identifiable information and intellectual property. DLP anonymizes this privacy-sensitive information from unauthorized access.
