GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a way of determining the coordinates of a geographic location. This requires a device equipped with a GPS receiver. Today, this is the case with most smartphones. The GPS receiver determines position using satellites that are part of the Global Positioning System.
Navigation is a popular application of GPS. A user's current location can also be used for Location Based Services, such as displaying regional information to the visitor of a mobile Web site.
