Internet of things
Also called: iot or internet of things
The Internet of Things is a development where everyday devices are connected to the Internet. Whereas today we still use the worldwide web with computers, laptops and smartphones, in the future the Internet will be all around us without us even noticing. Devices are getting smarter and will be able to communicate with each other and the rest of the world thanks to the Internet of Things.
A common example of a future Internet of Things is the refrigerator. In the future, your refrigerator will keep track of its own contents (for example, with RFID). When daily products run out, the refrigerator will automatically reorder them via the Internet. Another example of a home application of the Internet of Things is a smart thermostat that allows the temperature in the house to be controlled remotely or completely automatically.
By evolving devices and objects into embedded systems, many tasks can be taken out of our hands. Besides in the home, iot is also changing a lot within, for example, business (think logistics and storage), healthcare and on the streets (think security).
