Data breach
We speak of a data breach when personal data is destroyed, lost, altered or shared. It can be an intentional or unintentional leak. A data breach involves a breach of secure personal data. Bank records, personally identifiable information, and medical records are examples of personal data.
As of 2016, there is a data breach notification law in effect in the Netherlands. Serious data breaches must be reported to the Personal Data Authority within 72 hours. For serious data breaches, the victims of the data breach must also be notified.
Data breaches do not always result in major damage and dangers. However, sometimes dangers do come around the corner after a data breach, such as identity fraud, scams, phishing, hacking, or theft.
