A stock keeping unit (SKU) is an English term for a unique product or service, intended for sale, including all the features that distinguish it from other items and versions. Features may include the manufacturer, material, color, size, packaging, parts, functionality/extensions and conditions.
SKU codes
Typically, each SKU has its own code or product number to designate the particular version of a product or service. Distributors may use their own codes or copy them from the manufacturer. Different suppliers may therefore use different codes for the same item. The numbers may be arbitrarily chosen, but often parts of a product code refer to features such as the manufacturer, product group, and colors and sizes.
Bar and qr codes
To simplify handling around distribution, inventory management and sales, products or their packaging are often labeled with a barcode that allows the product code to be read. Frequently used standards for these codes are Universal Product Code (UPC) and International Article Number (EAN). Qr codes are also used for labeling and code reading.
When balancing inventory, the number of copies present of each SKU in the assortment is counted.
