Config file
Configuration files are operating systems also called config files.Config files are used briefly for:
- Mediating between programs and computer hardware
- Leading various software components in the right direction
- Adapting the behavior of a program to a specific device or user
Configuration files thus support the configuration of the computer system. Often a computer program starts by reading the config file. This contains the guidelines for proper operation of the given hardware and software environment. One can write a program which can be used on different computer systems. It then adapts itself based on the configuration data it finds in a given system.
H2: Using config files
Configuration files can also be used with:
- Internet Connections
- Applications such as compilers, spreadsheets and word processors
- Operating Systems
There are programs that re-read the configuration file repeatedly. So not just during the startup phase. Reading them repeatedly allows the program to see if there are any changes in the config file. When a change is detected, it usually leads to a restart of the programs that use the config file. This could include a reboot of the operating system, for example. To disable certain settings in the program, the user can comment out lines in the config file.
H2: Programs for config files
The config files were created by Microsoft and used on MS - DOS, Dos and early operating systems of Windows. For later versions of Windows from Windows 95 onward, config files are no longer used. There are different types of software to convert or open config files:
- Microsoft Visual Studio
- Notepad++
- FileViewPro
- Free File Viewer Pro
Config files can be edited with any text editor. This just doesn't mean you should edit it in different text editors. Be sure to open config files in the same program to avoid application failure.
