Search Engine
Also called: search engine
A search engine is an interactive website that allows users to find results on the Internet through a search . For most Internet users, the search engine is the starting point in the search for information on the World Wide Web.
Search engines like Google and Bing use special programs (also called robots or spiders) to continuously map the Internet in search of new information, adding Web pages and their content to a database also called an index, which provides a sort of registry of the Web. Once you enter a query into a search engine, it looks to see which Web pages match or are related to the keywords entered.
The strength of today's search engines lies in the quality of their search results, which are ranked according to complex algorithms. These include the quality and relevance of texts, as well as the degree to which the Web links to a particular page.
Search engine optimization involves efforts to be found better in search engines. Advertising in search engines using sponsored search results falls under search engine marketing.
A Web site that offers information and search capabilities focused on one topic is called a vertical search engine.
