Installed base
Also called: user base
Installed base refers to the number of systems on which a computer program or operating system is installed. For this purpose, a system is, for example, a computer, laptop, server, smartphone or tablet. The installed base is a good KPI for the popularity of software.
The installed base is not the same as the market share of a product. Market share is calculated based on the number of sales in a given period, while installed base is a sum of all active users.
Installed base is calculated based on sales and/or downloads. However, an installed base does not equal the total number of copies or licenses sold. After all, some of these will be removed, lost or replaced over time.
