Push notification
Also called: push notification or push message
A push notification is a notification displayed on a smartphone or tablet, usually from a mobile app. Push notifications allow application owners to show a notification to the user, even at a time when the app is not in use. Push notifications are used by social media apps, among others, to notify of a relevant post and by news apps to spread breaking news.
Push notifications offer a direct mode of communication at low cost ( data traffic only), unlike text messages, for example. Because they can only be used when the recipient has an app installed, they do need to be developed and promoted first. Care should also be taken when sending push messages, as an abundance of notifications is quickly perceived as annoying and can lead to the user deleting the app again.
