Universal Product Code(abbreviation: UPC) is a system for converting item numbers to a bar code in the United States. Using the UPC code and bar codes, checkout operations and inventory records can be automated.
Outside the Americas, the alternative European article numbering (EAN), an extension of the UPC for international use, is widely used.
