A status update is a short message posted on social media in which a user tells what is on their mind. Posting status updates is a form of microblogging. For example, a status update may contain an activity or emotion, a photo or video, or a link to a Web page.
A user's collection of status updates collectively form a timeline. Status updates play an important role in media such as Facebook and Twitter, among others. With the latter service, status updates have a maximum length of 140 characters.
