Users of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can set a photo that is displayed not only to visitors to their profile, but also with all the messages, photos and comments they post. This is called a profile picture or avatar. Displaying a face or image with posts adds to the personal nature of such sites. Many users set a selfie as their profile picture.
For companies active on social media, the profile picture is a way to increase their recognition. The profile page is commonly used to display the company's logo by default with posted messages.
