Liking is indicating that you like something on the Internet. The term became popular thanks to Facebook, but the functionality of assigning a like to something has made its way onto other websites and social media as well.
On Facebook, it is possible to like all kinds of content: status updates, photos, pages, etc. Since 2016, other emotions can also be linked to an update.
When a user likes a Facebook page, updates from that page appear in their timeline. It is also possible to like external Web pages. These can be equipped with a special like button.
Based on assigned likes, Facebook also determines what content might be of interest to friends and other users. Advertisers on Facebook can launch campaigns to garner more likes for their page, or alternatively have posts that are liked appear in friends' timelines.
