Buzz marketing is another word for word-of-mouth advertising. A buzz campaign aims to create as much buzz (literally: buzz) around a product or brand as possible. This is commonly used when launching new products. People are enticed to share information about it with others. Buzz marketing is a form of guerilla marketing akin to viral marketing.
How is buzz marketing used?
Successful buzz marketing campaigns can take several forms, including guerrilla marketing stunts, viral content on social media, influencer marketing and product placement. The goal is always to create a "buzz" that leads to increased awareness, interest and ultimately sales of the product or brand.
The effect of buzz marketing
One of the great advantages of buzz marketing is that it can lead to exponential growth in brand awareness and popularity, without requiring a large advertising budget. However, it is also a risky strategy because its success depends on audience reaction and is difficult to control. If people react negatively to the buzz, it can also be detrimental to the brand's image.
