Subscript
Also called: caption or inferior
In text formatted in subscript, the characters are aligned lower within the text line than the regular typesetting line. The characters are also slightly smaller than normal.
Subscript is used within chemistry, among other things, for formulas (for the number of atoms of one kind in a molecule, for example,CO2 andH2O) and indicating the atomic number before the symbol of their element (such as 81TI).
The opposite of subscript is superscript.
Using subscript in documents
Most word processing programs have tools for displaying text in subscript. Selected text can usually be converted to subscript with the key combination CTRL-SHIFT-(minus sign) (e.g. Microsoft Word) or CTRL-SHIFT-B (e.g. LibreOffice).
The HTML tag to display text in subscript is .
