Spot colors are additional colors used in print, in addition to white and black.
The term spot color dates back to the days when printing was done with printing plates and an additional plate had to be used for each additional color. Today, full color printing is not a problem. For example, within the CMYK color system, almost all colors can be mixed.
Nevertheless, in logos, corporate identities and other graphic designs, a limited number of colors are still usually used for reasons including recognizability. Despite the technical possibilities, the choice of black with one or two spot colors in printed matter is still quite common.
PMS colors are often chosen for spot colors. Working with Pantone colors guarantees that the color is identical in every design and with every product. Also, certain nuances and effects exist in the PMS system that are not possible within CMYK.
