Roman
Also known as: novel
Roman is a term derived from typography and refers to the writing of Roman times. The term can refer to two different aspects of a letter or typeface.
Standard Letter
Within a typeface, there may be different variants of letters, such as italic, oblique and gothic. When the designation roman is used it generally refers to the standard variant of a typeface.
Typeface
The other meaning of roman is that of letters provided with a serif. The script used in the Roman Empire included serif capital letters and letters provided with lines or brackets at the ends. Well-known typefaces with serifs are Times New Roman and Garamond.
