Shopping cart
Also called: shopping cart or shopping basket
A shopping cart is a virtual shopping cart within a Web shop that stores the items a visitor wishes to order. As in a physical store, the shopping cart allows the customer to checkout multiple products at once.
The shopping cart is usually a dedicated page that displays all selected items, with a button to create an order and checkout. Within this page, items can also be removed from the cart or the number of copies adjusted.
A summary of the contents of the shopping cart is usually shown on every page visited to keep reminding the visitor that he has yet to complete his order. Many web shops make convenient use of the shopping cart to show some relevant offers on the shopping cart page, just before checkout.
Origin shopping cart
The shopping cart was invented to make it easier for customers to buy multiple products at once. The first store where carts were used was Humpty Dumpty in Oklahoma City. The baskets used before then had limited capacity and soon became heavy. With a cart, however, it is no problem to enter a store with a hefty shopping list, and while pushing their cart, customers are enticed to buy even more products.
