A department store is a large store with a wide assortment, often in a building consisting of several floors. Most department stores belong to a chain. The assortment in department stores is displayed attractively and spaciously, without much pressure to buy. In many department stores, the emphasis of the assortment and atmosphere is on luxury, while others use an "honest" formula with low prices.
The English word for department store is department store. This clearly shows that a department store consists of several departments. The products sold can range from fashion, home décor, electronics, toys, books and media, personal care items, sporting goods and food. Larger department stores have a restaurant to entice customers to stay longer in the store and spend more.
Well-known retail chains with department stores in the Netherlands are Hema, De Bijenkorf, Hudson's Bay and Blokker. Internationally known are Harrods, Marks & Spencer and Harrods. Vroom & Dreesmann was also a well-known department store.
