Paragraph
Also called: paragraph
A paragraph or paragraph is a part of a text, consisting of one or more sentences, and can be recognized by the fact that it begins and ends on its own line. Dividing a text into paragraphs helps make it more readable. Sentences that belong together in content are followed by a resting point (a line transition), after which the text continues.
In addition to a line transition, paragraphs can also be separated by whitespace and headings. Especially when a text will be read from a screen, the use of whitespace and headings is recommended.
Many texts are structured so that the most important information is always in the first and last sentence of the paragraph. The first sentence addresses something; the last sentence makes a point or draws a conclusion. This paragraph is a good example of this. Any intervening sentences in this case contain details that support and connect the first and last sentences. Would you always read only the first and last sentence, the message still comes across.
A typical paragraph contains three to five sentences. Paragraphs in digital documents are often somewhat shorter than paragraphs in books, for example.
