Quote
Also called: quote
A quote or quotation is a statement or text quoted verbatim by someone else or reproduced in a particular publication.
Quotation involves copying a passage of text or wording verbatim. This is in contrast to paraphrasing, in which the author writes down the quoted text in his or her own words. When using a quote, it is customary to indicate the source (author and origin). When copying a quote in writing, the quote should be enclosed in double quotation marks.
Quote Law
Being allowed to cite the work and statements of others is governed by the right to quote. This is an exception to copyright law. Quotation law makes quoting permissible provided some conditions are met.
One of these is the application of source attribution. There must also be a legitimate purpose, such as discussing or commenting on a book, film, play, musical piece or speech. Here, the quotation is used as clarification or to provide context within a new stand-alone publication, without copying more than is strictly necessary.
In principle, no permission from the creator or rights holder is necessary to use a quote. However, the latter can still oppose quoting under the Copyright Act.
When a text is copied without citing its source, with the intention of making it appear as if the author wrote it himself, it is plagiarism.
