Boilerplate
Also known as: company profile
What is a boilerplate?
A boilerplate is a short text that can be reused without much modification. The boilerplate is a short text with important information about a company, a product or service. For example, these texts can be placed at the bottom of a press release or job posting.
The origin of the boilerplate
The term refers to the plates that manufacturers of steam boilers placed on their boilers so that it was clear who made the boiler. The term owes its fame in part to the printing press. For companies that were in the news a lot, newspapers had permanent etchings with an introductory text about the company.
Boilerplates can also refer to sample letters, standard contracts and petitions.
