A shop window is a display of products behind a store window. From the street, the window offers an impression of the assortment and entices passersby to come take a look inside.
At fashion stores, mannequins are usually displayed in the window dressed with clothes from the store. During sales, items that have been discounted are often displayed.
The first impression of a window display determines whether a passerby keeps looking and eventually visits the store to purchase something. It is also important to regularly update the window display to keep attracting the attention of regular passersby.
Specialized companies can be hired to design the most effective window display possible. These companies look not only at the selected items, but also at things like lighting and styling/decoration. To make the shop window more recognizable, windows are often provided with lettering.
