Wikipedia
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia maintained by volunteers. The name is a contraction of "wiki" and "encyclopedia. A wiki is a website that can be edited by any visitor. The information on Wikipedia can be freely viewed and edited by anyone.
The open nature ensures that the information available on Wikipedia keeps growing. Because anyone can contribute, the accuracy of articles cannot be guaranteed. The principle behind Wikipedia is that the community controls itself. Wikipedians must adhere to a number of guidelines when writing articles. These include that articles should be objective and that no copyrights should be violated.
Founded in 2001 by Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia is now available in nearly 300 languages. The Dutch-language version of Wikipedia had more than 1.7 million articles in April 2014.
