DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo is one of the many search engines out there on the Internet. What DuckDuckGo does is improve on traditional search engines by using frequently visited sites such as Wikipedia. In addition, the search engine does not look at the user's search behavior. As a result, the search engine says it can offer better privacy to their users. By not remembering search behavior, every user gets to see the same results for the same search query.
Google VS DuckDuckGo
Since Google is the largest search engine in the world, you have to be a standout to have an impact on this. By not withholding search behavior, DuckDuckGo offers this. There have been plenty of news stories in recent years about privacy violations and data sharing. This created a need among users for a search engine that feels more secure.
Despite often not realizing it, search engine results are hugely personalized. If two people search for the same thing on Google, they will see completely different results. DuckDuckGo is ideal for those users who want to search the Internet without ads and personalized results. Note, however, that the results are currently still mainly focused on American and English sites. In addition, DuckDuckGo does not offer an image search function or integrated map function like Google Images or Google Maps.
DuckDuckGo features
What the DuckDuckGo search engine offers has been made clear above. But what features can be found with the new search engine? These are:
- Bangs: an addition that allows you to search for keywords directly and a particular way or website. There are thousands of variants, a simple example is "!youtube" or "!yt" to search directly on YouTube
- Minus signs, quotation marks, AND/OR and parentheses: putting a minus sign after a word searches a page where that term does not appear. Words in quotes search specifically for that word combination. Two words that must occur without necessarily being next to each other are separated by AND, and if one of the two must occur, by OR. The parentheses are used to use the combination AND and OR, (den OR 's) AND (bosch OR hertogenbosch).
- By site search: adding the site to your search will only show results from a particular website
- Sort by date and country: at the top of the list at DuckDuckGo are filter options for search results
