5 W's
Also known as: 5W2H method
The term 5Ws is a marketing term related to a problem analysis tool. The five letters W stand for Who, What, When, Where and Why. In many cases, two H's are added to this method. These two letters H stand for How and How Much. In this way, the 5W2H method is created. This is a very easily applicable method using agile thinking. Within an agile environment, there is a desire to tackle practical problems quickly and effectively. The 5W2H method provides this. Using this methodology, a problem or situation is made understandable in a simple way. After all, the 5W2H method is an analysis tool that ensures that ideas are systematically sought and implemented.
The 5 W's represent the following question:
- What is the issue? So this involves a description of the problem. From this follow the action steps and their description.
- Why will it be done? This involves highlighting the justification and reason for the problem.
- Where does it take place? From this emerges a description of the locations where the problem has been identified.
- When does the problem arise? From this arises a description of the frequency and time of the problems.
- Who are involved in the situation? This highlights the people involved including those ultimately responsible.
The 2 H's refer to how the problem statement is addressed.
- How is the problem addressed? This point relates to method and process.
- How much will it cost to address the problem? This point relates to cost, expense and impact.
