Spindoctor
A spin doctor is a public relations consultant or public information officer who usually works for a politician or political party and aims to create the most positive image possible. Spin doctors look for ways to put a positive spin on the truth, such as the possible consequences of a proposed plan. As a result, the image of the "profession" of spin doctor itself is not so good.
In addition to providing strategic advice to the people they work for, spin doctors themselves maintain contacts with the media, which are generally off the record. When individuals or organizations are cornered, the spin doctor plays a central role in damage control.
Some techniques employed by spin doctors and their "clients.
- Selective use of facts and quotes;
- Taking advantage of the media through scoops and one-liners;
- Drive negative publicity about opponents;
- Dodge direct questions with indirect answers;
- Beautiful statements that leave room to return to them.
Two well-known Dutch political spin doctors are Jack de Vries and Kay van de Linde.
