Shipping list
Also known as: distribution list
A mailing list is a list of addresses where the same message or item is to be delivered. For letters, advertising mailings and other printed matter to be sent by mail, the list will consist of the name and address information of physical (postal) addresses. In the case of e-mail messages for a newsletter or press release, the mailing list will include at least e-mail addresses.
Mailing lists can consist of (part of) a company's customer database or be specially compiled for a particular purpose. They may include, for example, customers, prospects, suppliers, press contacts or subscribers to a newsletter or magazine to be distributed.
In addition to the data needed for addressing, a mailing list may contain additional information about the desired recipients. Additional information can be used, for example, to personalize a letter or e-mail message.
When distributing e-mails, in many software the mailing list can be viewed after starting the transmission to see the delivery status for each address. Sometimes this includes whether the emails have been opened and which links the recipient clicked on.
