Zero number
Also called: pilot issue or pilot issue
A zero issue is a limited-edition trial edition of a magazine, journal, e-zine or other publication. It is a complete edition intended as a test or teaser before the publication really takes off with the official first issue and subsequent editions.
Unlike a dummy, the proof issue contains real articles. This allows a reader to get a good impression of how the final issue should be. Unlike a proof issue, a zero issue is intended for wider distribution despite its limited print run.
Sometimes the choice is made to issue a zero issue first to test whether there is a target audience for a format and, if so, how they respond to the trial edition. The purpose of releasing a zero issue may also be to recruit advertisers. Being able to display a tangible product makes it easier to get ad space filled from the very first issue.
Experiences gained while compiling and producing the first issue and reactions from readers may still lead to minor adjustments before the start of regular issues.
