Bounce
Also called: non-delivery report(ndr) or delivery status notification(dsn)
When sending e-mail such as newsletters, for example, your digital message may not arrive. That's where the term "bounce" comes from, since the message comes back to the sender instead of the recipient. There are several reasons for this. Thereby, a distinction can be made between soft bounce and hard bounce.
There is a soft bounce if:
- the recipient's e-mail account is full
- the recipient's mail server is unreachable for technical reasons, for example
Therefore, a soft bounce is usually of a temporary nature. If you receive a soft bounce, it is therefore advisable to resend the mail at a later time.
There is a hard bounce if:
- the e-mail address of the recipient does not exist (anymore).
- spam block: the recipient's mail server blocks any mail traffic from your mail server.
