Non-spot
Also known as: advertiser-funded programming(AFP)
Non-spot is advertising on television and radio without using a commercial in a commercial break. Non-spot advertising involves promotion and brand awareness creation included in programs. The term is closely related to surreptitious advertising but without the negative connotation of subliminal messages.
Example of non-spot advertising are product placement and sponsored programs and program elements. By sponsoring programs rather than buying commercials during commercial breaks, the likelihood that the promotion will be seen and received positively is much greater. In practice, both forms are often combined as they also reinforce each other.
Abroad, the term advertiser-funded programming (AFP) is more common. The somewhat curious term non-spot is used mainly in the Netherlands. The term is said to have arisen from the accounting separation of the money flows for advertising within commercial breaks and outside of them, or spot and non-spot.
