Royalties
The term royalties refers to paying a fee for the use of another's rights. Examples of such rights include copyright, portrait rights, neighboring rights and ownership or right to use certain brand names or logos.
Some specific examples where paying royalties may be necessary:
- The licensed expansion of products under a particular name (such as merchandising)
- Using the image of a particular person (photo or video)
- The use of a particular photographer's photo
- Republishing texts insofar as it goes beyond a citation (such as articles or entire books)
- Performing a piece of music or using the melody and/or lyrics of an existing musical number
If no payment is required for the use of certain rights or properties, these are royalty-free. This may be subject to certain conditions, such as obtaining permission in advance or stating the origin and/or owner.
The term royalty is also used for persons who are part of a royal house or royal family.
